Section Plans to Probe Game Ending in Fight

SAN DIEGO — CIF San Diego Section Commissioner Kendall Webb said he plans to investigate a fight and subsequent melee that halted Friday’s City Western League boys’ basketball game between University City and Kearny.
Kearny campus police reportedly stopped the game in the fourth quarter after a fight broke out between two players. “An all-out riot” ensued after both benches emptied and fans entered the court, said University City Coach Tom Medigovich.
“If that is true, then both teams will have to forfeit the game,” Webb said Saturday. “The office has to investigate it. If I determine that’s what happened, a forfeit by both teams is going to be the penalty.”
Webb, who was out of town Friday, said he planned to contact both coaches, both officials and any media that attended. He also wants to see videotape. Webb said CIF rules dictate that both teams probably will be put on probation for the remainder of the season.
He added that any players who were ejected would be ineligible for the next game. None of these infractions can be appealed. Kearny was leading, 61-43.
