6 Young Scholars Win a Trip to Singapore
Six students at Harvard-Westlake School in North Hollywood have won a nine-day trip next month to Singapore and Malaysia.
The team and four others from Southern California high schools won the Ambassadors to Singapore Competition, a contest designed to test their knowledge of current events and Asian cultures.
More than 70 youths were quizzed on subjects such as literacy rates in Asian countries and the names of Asian airports.
The Harvard-Westlake team consists of seniors Anthony Charuvastra, David Ganz, Benjamin Lord, Jeremy Martin, David McAdams and Masayori Oka. Teacher Phillip Sweeney will accompany them.
The contest is sponsored by Singapore Airlines and administered by the Los Angeles Times through its Times in Education Program.
