Proposed Code for Filmmakers

Michael Medved, in his well-intentioned but misguided essay (“A Sickness of the Soul Replaces the Tinsel,” Commentary, Feb. 6) supporting film industry self-censorship, makes the same mistake as Mahony in addressing the role of film in society. He starts from the flawed premise that art affects the culture, when reality is the exact opposite.
Film, and all art, reflects the best and the worst of the world it inhabits. If Medved and Mahony wish to see more “wholesome” entertainment, they should work toward making a better world instead of blaming the messenger.
