Philippines Dumps ‘Nuisance Candidates’

MANILA — The Commission on Elections on Wednesday disqualified 68 so-called “nuisance candidates” for president, saying their running would make a mockery of the national elections. The decision left eight major contenders, two from rival factions in President Corazon Aquino’s administration.
One of the disqualified candidates had vowed to free all prisoners from Manila’s jails. Another said God had called on her to lead the country out of its miseries.
The Philippines is to elect a new president, a new Congress and more than 17,000 local officials May 11.
