Sabe Younger
School: Calvary Chapel High
Sport: Basketball
Position: Forward
Class: Junior
Younger, who was an All-Alpha League player for Sierra Madre Maranatha last season, got a late start in basketball this season because of his commitment to the Eagles’ football team, which advanced to the Southern Section championship game. But after some adjusting, he has become one of the most consistent performers for Calvary Chapel. “Sabe is our all-round guy,” Calvary Chapel Coach Steve Middleton said. “He isn’t usually our leading scorer, high rebounder or top assist-getter, but he’s always second in those categories.” Last week, however, Younger, a 6-foot-4 1/2 swingman, was the primary force in three Arrowhead League victories for the Eagles (16-4, 9-0). He had 33 points and 13 rebounds in the Eagles’ 95-68 victory over California School for the Deaf Riverside. Then he scored six of his seven points in the fourth quarter of a 75-74 comeback victory over Leffingwell Christian. Younger closed the week by scoring 22 points and pulling down a school-record 27 rebounds in an 82-42 victory over Sherman Indian.
Other top performers:
Mark Berokoff, who had 30 points and eight rebounds in Whittier Christian’s 72-65 victory over Cerritos Valley Christian and 23 points and eight rebounds in the Heralds’ 56-52 loss to Ontario Christian.
Jose Escudero, who scored two goals in Saddleback’s 3-1 Sea View League soccer victory over Woodbridge and two more in the Roadrunners’ 5-2 victory over University.
Jason Cunningham, who had 28 points and 21 rebounds in Los Alamitos’ 84-60 victory over El Dorado.
Terry Mann, who kept Sunny Hills in the Freeway League race by hitting a three-point shot at the buzzer to give the Lancers a 59-58 victory over Sonora. Mann had 29 points and 17 rebounds.
