Poway Shuts Out San Dieguito

As though there was any doubt which school in San Diego County had the best dual-meet wrestling team, the matter was decided Saturday when Poway--ranked fourth in the nation--beat San Dieguito, 58-0, in the finals of the Section Dual Meet Championships at Escondido High School.
Poway (16-0), which had its streak of 154 consecutive matches without a loss broken last year when it skipped this tournament for a national meet in Oklahoma, extended its current streak to 19 matches, including a 78-0 first-round victory over St. Augustine and a 50-5 victory over Escondido.
Steve Lee (101 pounds), Steve Furtag (112) and Corey Farkas (heavyweight) pinned their opponents in the championship match, and Rich Salo (119) and John Haas (171) won by technical falls, victories by more than 15 points.
Third-seeded San Dieguito reached the championship with a 29-28 upset of No. 2 Valhalla in the semifinals. Valhalla was then beaten in the third-place match by Escondido, 47-18.
“We wrestled well, but there’s still some room for improvement, especially when you’re talking about competing at the state level,” Poway Coach Wayne Branstetter said.
