Owner of Tiger Cub Fined, Forfeits Animal

A white tiger cub seized by authorities near the Mexico-U.S. border was forfeited Wednesday to the United States, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Diego said.

The tiger was seized by U.S. Customs because it is an endangered species and, by law, cannot be transported in the United States without complying with government regulations, Assistant U.S. Atty. Leah R. Bussell said.

Jorge Hank Rhon, owner of the Agua Caliente race track agreed through a lawyer to forfeit it and pay a $25,000 fine for the cub’s illegal presence in the United States, Bussell said. Rhon’s tiger was seized in August as Rhon’s nephew was transporting the animal from Coronado to Mexico.
