Azusa : Charges Filed in Boy’s Death

A fight at Azusa High School last week that ended with the death three days later of a 17-year-old boy has resulted in criminal charges being filed against the victim’s opponent.
The 17-year-old suspect, who was not identified because he is a minor, faces trial on one count of involuntary manslaughter. If convicted in juvenile court, the youth could serve up to four years in a California Youth Authority facility.
The fight broke out after words were exchanged between the victim, Eric Crabtree, and the suspect on campus at lunchtime Jan. 16, said the prosecutor, Deputy Dist. Atty. Brian Wooldridge. The two agreed to fight later.
When classes ended at 2:40 p.m., both took off their jackets and began punching each other outside a classroom, Wooldridge said.
Crabtree died at Foothill Presbyterian Hospital in Glendora of head injuries sustained after both youths fell to the ground and Crabtree’s assailant picked him up and slammed him onto the concrete, the prosecutor said.
