Rookie Falko Zandstra of the Netherlands won the men’s European Speedskating Championships at Heerenveen, Netherlands, after taking an early points lead and then winning the key 1,500-meter event. Zandstra, 20, beat all-around champion Johann-Olav Koss of Norway. Olympic favorite Gunda Niemann of Germany won three of the four women’s distances, the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 races.
