Nixon on U.S. Power
Nixon fails to mention the main reason that communism failed--it went bankrupt. The events of the past two years have underscored more obviously than ever before the fact that the world’s events are driven by economics, first and foremost.
If the United States really wants to advance the cause of freedom, it needs to help these fledgling democracies learn the economic facts of life; specifically, how to differentiate between political rhetoric and economic realities.
There is bound to be a boomerang negative reaction among the people of these neo-capitalist states when the penny finally drops and the realization dawns that democratic governments can go broke too. They need to see that they can do so without succumbing once more to totalitarianism.
