MANCHESTER, England — Five prison inmates went on trial Wednesday, charged with murdering a sex offender during one of Britain’s worst jail riots in decades.
Strangeways Prison was in the hands of rampaging prisoners for 25 days during a 1990 disturbance. Some of the rioters broke into a segregated wing housing sex offenders, often loathed by other convicts.
Several were attacked, and one, Derek White, died a few days after suffering multiple injuries to the head and chest.
