Digital Equipment to Slash PC Prices: Digital Equipment Corp., best known for its mainframe computers, will move next week to boost its personal computer business by cutting its PC prices about 50% and offering the machines by mail order, a spokesman said. Digital has earmarked at least $5 million for advertising through June as part of its marketing program. After the price cuts, Digital’s high-end PC--its 433 graphics workstation--will sell for $5,995; the company’s low-end 386 systems will start at $1,899.
