WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Quick Start Brings USC Victory Over Oregon
Lisa Leslie scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds and USC raced to an 8-0 lead and never looked back in an 83-55 victory over Oregon in a Pacific 10 Conference game Sunday at USC Lyon Center.
After holding a 41-31 advantage at halftime, USC (8-3 overall, 2-0 in the Pac-10) went on another 8-0 run to start the second half. It was the Trojans’ fourth victory in a row and sixth of their last seven in a streak in which they have lost only to top-ranked Virginia.
In a game in which USC shot 50% from the field--57.1% in the first half--all five Trojan starters scored in double figures, including Joni Easterly, with 16 points; Jualeah Woods, with 13; and Kim Gessig and Tammy Story, with 10 each.
Staci Wallenborn led Oregon (8-4, 0-2) with 18 points. Missy Stowell and Vanessa Selden had 10 points each.
UCLA 89, Oregon State 71--Rehema Stephens scored 25 points, 21 in the first half, for the Bruins (9-3, 2-0) at the John Wooden Center.
UCLA made 26 of 32 free throws, the major difference in the game.
Stephens, who also had a game-high nine rebounds, led the Bruins to a 52-33 halftime lead en route to their fifth victory in a row.
Natalie Williams added 18 points and seven rebounds for UCLA, which also got 10 points from DeDe Mosman.
The Bruins shot 52.8% in the first half in taking charge.
Sonjhia Fleming scored 23 points for Oregon State (5-7, 0-2). Judy Shannon added 18 points before fouling out with 1:07 to play.
