Newport Beach yachtsman John Bertrand, above, tried to organize his own entry, but will be sailing on Conner’s crew instead. . . . His effort, titled Beach Boys USA, had the backing of the singing group. But in the current economic slump, attracting enough corporate sponsors proved too difficult. . . . “Instead of doing a poor job,” he says, “I thought it was better to pull the plug.”
