Nation IN BRIEF : LOUISIANA : Mardi Gras Club Cancels Its Parade
- Share via
The third oldest Carnival club in New Orleans canceled its 1992 parade after the City Council ordered groups that provide lavish Mardi Gras parades to integrate within two years or lose parade permits. The controversial ordinance orders the clubs, most of which are all-white and all-male, to eliminate barriers such as race, sex and sexual orientation. “You don’t go where you’re not wanted,” one member of the defecting Knights of Momus told the Times-Picayune newspaper. At least one other old-line krewe, as carnival clubs are called, is expected to follow suit.
