In other Sunset League games:
Marina 58, Fountain Valley 33--Marina opened the game with a 17-0 run, led, 35-13, at halftime and was never threatened. The game featured defending league champion Marina and last year’s runner-up Fountain Valley.
Marina held the Barons scoreless until Fountain Valley’s Kathleen Traw scored a basket with 1:58 remaining in the first quarter.
Jessica Trippett led Marina (12-2, 1-0) with 19 points and seven rebounds and Karla Orosco added nine points and five assists. Julie Murdent led Fountain Valley (6-8, 0-1) with nine points.
Santa Ana 57, Westminster 20--Carmen Payan led Santa Ana (7-2) with 16 points, six steals and five assists.
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Newport Harbor 48, Edison 39--Maureen McLaren had 21 points and 20 rebounds for visiting Newport Harbor (8-4). Kala Ross added 13 points, and also defended Melanie Iwamasa, the Sunset League most valuable player last year. Iwamasa led Edison (6-4) with 22 points.
University 36, Mission Viejo 35--Tara Wolff scored 13 points for University (9-5) which won its seventh consecutive game. Kelly McGlothlin led Mission Viejo with 17 points.
Century 40, Santa Ana Valley 32--After trailing, 19-12, in the first half, Century (10-3) scored 16 consecutive points in the third quarter. Santa Ana Valley scored three points late in the quarter to cut the Santa Ana Valley lead to 28-22.
Valencia 49, Katella 44--Valencia (7-6) trailed the entire game before taking the lead, 42-41, with about three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter on Allison Granger’s shot. Granger had 22 points and 18 rebounds for the Tigers.
El Dorado 41, Villa Park 35--Erin Vessey had 15 points for visiting El Dorado (10-3). Teammate Jody Caruso had 13 points, 19 rebounds and six steals.
Magnolia 50, Sunny Hills 34--Diana Cervantes had 21 points and four assists and Koko Hampton had 10 points and five rebounds for Magnolia (2-7).
Rosary 50, Western 48--Kristina Luna scored her only points of the game on an eight-foot shot at the buzzer, giving host Rosary (4-6) the victory.
Point guard Jennifer Chey, who had 10 points, eight assists and six steals, dribbled past a triple team at midcourt and passed to Luna for the game winner.
