California Athletic Director Bob Bockrath said he wants to find a new coach within three weeks to replace Bruce Snyder.
Bockrath said he has received an application from a Cal assistant coach he would not name. Cal assistants Steve Mariucci, Kent Baer and Rod Marinelli are expected to apply for the job.
Snyder replaces fired Arizona State coach Larry Marmie and received a five-year contract reportedly worth $3 million, more than double his deal at Cal.
Snyder, at a news conference in Tempe, Ariz., said the money was not the primary reason for switching jobs. He said Arizona State’s facilities, location and administration offer the right combination.
Snyder was scheduled to coach the West team in Saturday’s Hula Bowl at Honolulu, but he will be replaced by Rich Ellerson, the defensive coordinator at Hawaii.
