A gunman who holed up in his apartment Sunday after firing a shotgun and pistol at police ended the four-hour standoff by surrendering in the nude, authorities said. “He walked out unannounced wearing nothing but a baseball cap,” said Police Lt. Ed McErlain. “He was holding a white towel above his head.” Kent L. Maynard, 40, was booked for investigation of attempted murder of a police officer and for shooting at an inhabited dwelling. He was being held at the Huntington Beach police station in lieu of $250,000 bail. The incident began at about 5:20 a.m. when a man believed to be Maynard called police to report a kidnaping, McErlain said. As officers approached the apartment building, several shots were fired at them, McErlain said. Officers returned fire, he said. Despite the kidnaping claim, the man was alone in the apartment.
