California IN BRIEF : SAN FRANCISCO : Heart Patient Finishes City Walk

Bob Carlson, who was found to have heart disease in 1986, set out to walk every street, alley and stairway on the city map. He began less than two weeks after undergoing open-heart surgery in 1987, and last weekend made it up Twin Peaks Boulevard, the last stretch of his five-year hike. “I had done nothing up to that point,” said Carlson, 48. “I’d walk a certain street and cross it off the map as I went along. It became a challenge,” he said. Along the way, Carlson wore out five pairs of shoes.
