Hearing on Condo Conversions Set
A public hearing will he held Wednesday in Marina del Rey on the controversial issue of converting marina apartments to condominiums.
At present, only high-rise apartment buildings in the marina can be converted to condominiums under a policy adopted by Los Angeles County. The entire marina is owned by the county, and apartment complexes, like other businesses, are operated by private developers on long-term leases.
Tenant activists believe that the hearing, set for 10 a.m. at Burton Chace Park, is an effort by marina leaseholders to push for changes in the policy so that low-rise marina apartment buildings can also be converted to condominiums.
The issue has sharply divided the county’s Small Craft Harbor Commission, an advisory body appointed by the Board of Supervisors.
Commission Chairman William Pagen ordered the hearing in November under pressure from the County Board of Supervisors to increase revenues from the marina. By doing so, Pagen blocked fellow commissioners from voting on a motion to prevent the public hearing from taking place.
