Unheralded Sergio Bergamelli, 21, of Italy won the new year’s first World Cup ski race, beating favorite Alberto Tomba in a giant slalom at Kranjska Gora, Yugoslavia. Bergamelli had a two-run total of 2:18.18, more than two seconds ahead of the field.
