Plea for Assistance
We are sympathetic with the Board of Supervisors in the need to balance the county budget, a difficult task. We are concerned that the Board voted last month to cut general assistance by eliminating from the rolls able-bodied adults.
We agree that employable people should search diligently for employment before and during receipt of public aid. But when, as now, employment opportunities in San Diego are very scarce, we think able-bodied adults who prove their eligibility for general assistance should receive it.
We ask you to reconsider your Dec. 17 decision, to find other, humane ways to balance the budget.
