Reviewing Our Year-End Review

It looks as if television has finally overtaken motion pictures as the most popular form of media entertainment.
In a year when The Times’ lead movie critic could pick only nine best movies (instead of 10), TV dominated our lives, with such momentous events as the Gulf War, the Clarence Thomas Supreme Court confirmation hearings and the William Kennedy Smith rape trial shown on the small screen.
The axiom “bigger is better” now has to be changed to “smaller is better.” For though television has a smaller screen, it apparently has a more powerful influence.
