Coach Walt Kyle’s decision to start backup goaltender Corwin Saurdiff backfired as Sweden defeated Team USA, 8-6, the Americans’ first loss in the World Junior Hockey Championships at Kaufbeurn, Germany.
The Swedes scored four times during the first period and four times during the second.
Said Kyle: “I wanted to give Mike (Dunham) a rest, especially since we have a great chance at winning a medal.”
The Americans will play defending champion Canada Wednesday.
