Griswold, Valiant Pete Meet Again

Griswold, the fastest quarter horse ever at 870yards, will attempt to avenge his neck loss to thoroughbred Valiant Pete in the $100,000 Marathon Handicap tonight at Los Alamitos.

Griswold, the world record-holder with a 43.99 clocking, has been established the morning line favorite by linemaker Ed Burgart.

Valiant Pete defeated Griswold in a $100,000 winner-take-all match race at Santa Anita last April 20 at a distance of four furlongs (880 yards). The pair raced neck and neck throughout, with the thoroughbred leading all the way to a world record-tying clocking of 44 1/5 seconds.

Six other horses are also entered in 870-yard Grade I event, one thoroughbred and five quarter horses. Valiant Pete drew the No. 2 post with Griswold alongside in the No. 3 spot.
