NATION IN BRIEF : CONNECTICUT : Tons of Trash Taken to Capitol in Protest
- Share via
A group of Bridgeport, Conn., residents brought tons of trash to the state Capitol in Hartford, demanding that the state clean up the huge, illegal dump known as “Mt. Trashmore.” The protesters arrived with a pickup truck containing several tons of construction debris from the dump and a letter asking Gov. Lowell P. Weicker Jr. to clean it up. A state judge had fined the brothers responsible for the dump $868,950 and ordered them to spend their weekends in jail until they remove the trash but a spokesman for the Coalition to Rebuild Bridgeport said residents turned to the state after deciding jail terms would not persuade Geno and Russell Capozziello to haul the trash to a licensed landfill.
