Encinitas Man Dies When Truck Overturns
A 30-year-old man was killed on Interstate 5 in Encinitas early Thursday when his pickup swerved to avoid a stalled tractor-trailer and overturned, the California Highway Patrol said.
Kevin Sean Rodriguez of Encinitas was on the MacKinnon Avenue overpass about 2 a.m. when he sideswiped a truck stalled on the right shoulder of the road and lost control of his vehicle, CHP Officer Jackie Sturges said.
Rodriguez’s pickup flipped, ejected him and pinned him underneath, Sturges said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other driver, Jorge Rivas, 34, of San Diego, was not hurt.
Police said Rivas legally used flares to signal that his tractor-trailer was stalled.
