OUTLOOK
Huntington Beach probably has its best team since the Oilers won the Sunset League title in 1983. That team, led by Jamal Gardner and Danny Thompson, finished with a 20-6 record. The Oilers’ four returning starters are all solid players. The addition of Gonzalez, a powerfully built 210-pound sophomore forward, gives Huntington Beach the only player in the league who is capable of guarding Edison’s Brandon Jessie one-on-one. Chang, the team’s best outside shooter, sat out of last week’s Tournament of Champions at Ocean View with a sore knee, and Ambrose broke his finger in practice last Wednesday. Despite that, the Oilers gave the City Section’s top-ranked team, Westchester, all it could handle before losing, 71-55. Gonzalez ranks with Mater Dei’s Miles Simon as one of the top two sophomores in Orange County. Gonzalez was virtually unstoppable against Westchester, scoring 21 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Miller can enjoy the coaching flexibility this versatile group gives him, by employing a three-guard offense with Chang, Walden and Jones, or a big-man lineup that includes Vanderwal, Ambrose and Gonzalez.
