Insurer Ordered Into Conservatorship: Commonwealth United Insurance Co., an “offshore” West Indies insurer not licensed in California, was ordered into conservatorship by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge William Huss. The company sold 50,000 policies in the state. Huss also named Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi to liquidate 14 other unlicensed insurers that have been doing some business in the state. The others were Apex Placement, Brasoz International, Caribbean Excess, Caribbean Protective Excess, Caribbean Title, Northern Commercial Fire & General, Overseas Deposit Reinsurance, Southern Commercial & General, Wilmington Marine & General, Wilmington National Assurance, Guardian, Goliath Reinsurance, Majestic International and Royal International.
