Player Injured in Game Against Toros Expected to Be Out a Month

Cal State Hayward basketball player Gennifer Manzo was released from Harbor/UCLA Medical Center on Sunday and should resume her basketball career after a month of rehabilitation, said Hayward Coach Dennis Frese.
Manzo, 20, suffered a bruised spinal cord during a game at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. Frese says Manzo got hurt when she dove for a loose ball and another player’s knee hit her neck. The Toros were leading, 73-45, when the game was stopped with 57 seconds remaining.
Frese says the bruise produced spinal swelling that caused Manzo to lose sensation in her neck and shoulder area. But the coach said magnetic resonance imaging test results were negative.
“She’s doing fine,” he said. “She’s still a little sore, though. After a month of rest and treatment, she will play again.”
