OUTLOOK
What the Cavaliers lack in size they will try to make up with quickness and experience. Anderson calls this the best team he’s had in five seasons at the school and boldly predicts it will be the most successful basketball season ever for Santiago. His goal is to guide the Cavaliers to no worse than a third-place finish in league. “I think we’ll give a lot of teams trouble with our pressing, man-to-man defense and with our quickness,” Anderson said. “It’s going to be exciting.” The Cavaliers return four starters from a squad that finished sixth in the league in 1990-91. They include Carrasco, an all-league forward who averaged 14.4 points and 6.6 rebounds, and Castro, who averaged 10.2 points. Entrusted with the task of getting the ball to them will be Nguyen (8.3 points and 3.8 assists last season), whom Anderson said has a good three-point shot and is as quick as any guard in the county. Among the new crop, Palayo, who is up from the junior varsity, could crack the starting lineup. “He’s going to be a top player,” Anderson said. “He’s looking to start at forward. He’s real aggressive and a good scorer.”
