OUTLOOK
Kiernan returns to La Quinta, where he won five consecutive league championships with the girls’ team, after coaching the Savanna boys’ team one season. What he inherits is a team that finished seventh in the league last season and one that doesn’t have anyone taller than 6-foot-4 junior center Zane Parkin. Because of the lack of size, Kiernan said he will implement a fast-break offense directed by point guard Nguyen, a transfer from Connecticut, and hopefully anchored by the shooting of Bennett (12 points per game last year). Huss, a three-year varsity player, averaged 8.1 rebounds last season and Kiernan is looking to him for much-needed muscle around the boards. Kiernan also points to newcomer Samuels as a key component. “He’s the best leaper on the team,” Kiernan said. Greenfield, whose father, Jim, is coach at Golden West College, is among the other new members to the squad who figure to get their share of floor time. “He’s one of the most talented players to enroll at La Quinta in awhile,” Kiernan said.
