In the Coca-Cola boys’ basketball tournament final:
Mater Dei 70, Lynwood 59--Early in the third quarter, Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight had seen enough.
The Monarchs trailed Lynwood by five points when McKnight called a timeout.
Apparently, the message McKnight delivered to his players was as clear as it was loud. The previously uninspired Monarchs followed the timeout with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, and Mater Dei didn’t trail again en route to the victory at Trabuco Hills High.
“I was a little perturbed that my leaders weren’t being leaders, they were just following the pack,” McKnight said. “Against a team as good as Lynwood, we need leaders, not followers.”
Mater Dei (4-0) was sparked by forward Marmet Williams, who scored 10 of his team-high 22 points in the third quarter. Williams also had 16 rebounds and led a strong Monarch defensive effort in the second half.
Lynwood (3-1) made only seven of 28 shots in the last two quarters.
Miles Simon hit a pair of three-pointers in the fourth quarter, both of which extended Mater Dei’s lead to 10 points. Reggie Geary, who played a lackluster first half, scored nine of his 13 points in the final 14 minutes to add to the Monarch comeback.
