OUTLOOK
In just two seasons, Smith has won the State Division III championship (1990) and the Southern Section 3-AA championship (1991), finished as the 3-AA runner-up (1990) and, maybe more important, beaten Mater Dei (1991)--a first for the Friars since Gary McKnight became the Mater Dei coach in 1982. Now Smith may have his best team yet. With four starters back, the Friars are loaded with experience. “We have four guys who were on the Oakland Coliseum floor two years ago,” Smith said. “That’s a pretty big thing for us.” Anderson, a three-year starter, is the best of the bunch. He averaged 17 points and was a second-team All-Orange County selection last season. Kenney (12 points per game) and Rubio (10) were a formidable pair in the backcourt. Kenney, a deadly outside shooter, played well during the summer. Dodd is a banger who averaged 10 points. He will get some help inside from Grassman, who saw little action last season because of injuries. “He’s had knee problems, but he survived the summer,” Smith said. “We’re looking for him to be an impact player. He will certainly give us something a 6-1 player can’t.” In any other league, the Friars would be favorites.
