TOKYO — Japanese junior-featherweight boxer Minoru Katsumata died of a brain injury Monday after falling into a coma following a 10-round bout Sunday.
A spokesman for the Japan Boxing Commission said that Katsumata, 20, died early Monday after his defeat in a nontitle bout against Takashi Murata in Nagoya.
The fight was stopped shortly after the start of the 10th round.
The spokesman said that Katsumata was the 19th boxer to die of boxing-related injuries in the country since the Japan Boxing Commission was set up in 1952.
