Texas’ McWilliams Steps Down as Coach

Texas football Coach David McWilliams, whose Longhorns fell from Southwest Conference champions to also-rans in one year, has resigned after five years as coach of his alma mater. Texas finished 5-6, McWilliams’ third losing season in five years.
McWilliams, 49, captain of the Longhorns’ 1963 national championship team and an assistant coach from 1970-85, said he had asked to be reassigned. McWilliams ended the second year of a five-year contract worth $1 million.
