Woods Trails by Three in Junior Golf Meet

TUCSON, Ariz. — Tiger Woods of Cypress fired a five-over-par 77 Thursday to trail Ted Purdy of Scottsdale, Ariz., by three strokes after the first round of the Rolex Junior Classic at La Paloma Country Club.
Woods is in a three-way tie for sixth place. Scott Gibson of Huntington Beach shot a 79, Joe Garner of El Toro an 83 and Paul Hinkle of Costa Mesa and Ben Garner each had an 86.
Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza is nine shots behind Estefania Knuth of Spain after an 11-over-par 83 in the girls’ competition.
