The Middle Class
For the first time since I can remember, Column Left and Column Right have agreed (Nov. 7). George Will (“It Isn’t Quite Morning for the Democrats,” Column Right) and Alexander Cockburn (“A Battle Not Likely to Be Fought,” Column Left) both seemed to agree that Harris Wofford won (a Senate seat) because he had ideas that Americans (or at least the people of Pennsylvania) responded to.
But the message seems clear that the Democrats won’t be able to capitalize on his momentum. Mario Cuomo, the Great Democratic Hope, doesn’t have the answers. He reminds me of George Bush in 1988, all bite and no substance.
Bush can lose, but only to a candidate who can take the growing tide of voter discontent and turn it into an agenda that Americans will respond to. Sounds like Ronald Reagan in 1980 to me.
