OXNARD : Bicyclist, 85, Dies After Car Hits Him
- Share via
An 85-year-old Oxnard man was killed on his morning bicycle ride Monday by a motorist who did not see him in the pre-dawn darkness, authorities said.
Van Nguyen was walking his bicycle across Victoria Avenue near Doris Avenue at 5:49 a.m. when he was struck by a car driven by Robert Anderson, 53, of Ventura, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Deputy Coroner Jim Wingate said Nguyen was in a coma when an ambulance arrived. He was pronounced dead at nearby St. John’s Regional Medical Center at 8:08 a.m. without regaining consciousness, Wingate said.
Family members told authorities that Nguyen routinely went out on a morning walk or bike ride to stay fit. A CHP officer said Nguyen was wearing dark clothing and his bicycle had no light.
