WAC ROUNDUP : New Mexico Surprises Air Force, 34-32
David Margolis kicked a 30-yard field goal with one minute left to give New Mexico a surprising 34-32 Western Athletic Conference victory over Air Force Saturday night at Albuquerque, N.M.
Freshman quarterback Stoney Case completed 25 of 39 passes for 393 yards and two touchdowns as New Mexico, 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the WAC, ended an 11-game losing streak in conference play.
The loss probably ended Air Force’s chances to catch WAC leader Brigham Young.
Air Force (7-3, 5-2) lost despite rushing for 525 yards against a New Mexico defense that ranks 105th against the run.
Case, given the starting job three weeks ago, set a school record for most passing yards by a freshman, eclipsing the mark of 390 yards set by senior Jeremy Leach in 1988.
Air Force was ahead, 32-31, after quarterback Rob Perez scored on a 15-yard run with 3:56 left and the Falcons added a two-point conversion on a run by halfback Antoine Banks.
On the ensuing possession, Case completed a 40-yard pass to halfback Marc Wilson with 3:00 left to the Air Force 22. Three plays later, Margolis made the winning kick.
San Diego State 24, Wyoming 22--Eric Sutton was burned on a 70-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Yarborough with 5:51 left, but Sutton broke up a two-point conversion pass to Yarborough to preserve the WAC victory at San Diego.
Wayne Pittman gained 146 yards for San Diego State (7-2, 5-1), which blocked a 57-yard field goal attempt by Sean Fleming on the final play of the game to secure its fifth consecutive win.
Wyoming is 4-5-1 and 2-3-1.
