PLNC Sweeps Bronco Invitational
The men’s and women’s cross-country teams from Point Loma Nazarene College won both their races at the Cal Poly Pomona Bronco Invitational in San Dimas on Saturday.
The men scored 44 points, easily outdistancing second-place UC Irvine (79). Robert Keter led PLNC over the eight-kilometer course in 24 minutes 33 seconds. He had plenty of company among the leaders, teammates Scott Lardner (fifth, 24:34), Ken Jansson (sixth, 24:41), Ken Hall (13th, 24:50), and Gus Arce (21st, 25:20).
The women scored 62 points, also beating Irvine (76). Vanessa Couch took third in 17:38 over five kilometers, followed by Guadalupe Ambriz (eighth, 18:08), Anette Ronnerman (14th, 18:32), Melissa Mabe (17th, 19:00), and Michelle Rivera (34th, 21:18).
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Visiting Fresno Pacific defeated PLNC, 15-13, 17-15, 15-11, in a Golden State Athletic Conference match. Robin Rabello, a sophomore from Point Loma High, had 20 kills for PLNC (12-15, 2-8). Fresno Pacific (25-5, 10-0) is ranked third nationally in the NAIA.
University of San Diego scored a 15-8, 15-4, 7-15, 15-7 West Coast Conference victory over visiting St. Mary’s behind Andrea Bruns’ 15 kills. Nikki Wallace and Amy McMahon had 12 kills, and Jennifer Lofftus had 11. USD is 14-10, 4-4; St. Mary’s is 8-15, 1-6.
Gracie Schutt had 20 kills and Stephanie Riley 15 to lead San Diego State to a 15-8, 15-12, 13-15, 15-8 Western Athletic Conference victory over visiting Wyoming. Carolyn Kaspar added 14 kills for SDSU (12-11, 4-2). Wyoming is 10-8, 2-3.
MEN’S SOCCER
Despite 27 shots on goal to Cal Baptist’s 10, PLNC had to settle for a 3-3 GSAC tie. Noel Pekel, Dave Beck and Steve Gulbrandson scored goals for the Crusaders, who got assists from Beck, Steve Beck and Blake Okland. PLNC dropped to 2-12-1, 0-4-1, while Cal Baptist is 8-8-2, 2-3-1.
Doug Barry scored USD’s only goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to Cal State Northridge in a nonconference match.
SDSU and California played to a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods in front of 392 at Aztec Bowl. SDSU’s Steve Hesse tied the game with a goal at the 66:10 mark.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Katy Dulock and Kalyn Shea each scored two goals to lead UCSD to a 6-0 victory over visiting Azusa Pacific. The Tritons improved to 13-0-1; the Cougars fell to 3-5-1.
WATER POLO
UCSD couldn’t match up to the nation’s top-ranked team and the defending NCAA champions, California, losing to the Bears, 14-5, in a quarterfinal game of the 49er Invitational at Belmont Plaza Pool. The Tritons, who beat UC Santa Barbara 11-7 in a first-round game, are 14-11. The Bears are 17-1.
