COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Santiago Alvarez, East Los Angeles--Alvarez, a former All-City quarterback at Franklin High, completed 30 of 42 passes for 492 yards and six touchdowns in East L.A.’s 42-32 victory over Antelope Valley. Alvarez, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound sophomore, was The Times’ Glendale Back of the Year in 1989 and set a state high school record when he passed for eight touchdowns in a game his senior season. “I knew I could throw the ball against them, but not as much as I did (Saturday),” Alvarez said. “It was like, ‘Here we go again.’ I knew I had to come out and do something or (the Antelope Valley defense) would come after me.”

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Chris Hale--Hale, a 5-foot-7, 165-pound defensive back who was an All-American at Glendale College and also played at USC, intercepted a pass and had six tackles for the Buffalo Bills Monday night in a 35-16 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Hale, 25, was activated from the injured-reserve list on Oct. 12.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Tom McGraw, Verdugo Hills--Talk about good first impressions. McGraw, a 5-foot-9 junior, joined the Verdugo Hills football team last week after transferring from South Hills High in

West Covina. McGraw, who had played junior varsity football at Verdugo Hills last season, stepped in at quarterback and led the Dons to their first victory, a 15-14 win over Hollywood. McGraw scored Verdugo Hills’ first touchdown

on a four-yard run. The Dons were behind, 14-7, when McGraw threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Pat Eubanks with 44 seconds left. McGraw then passed to Justin Jamison for the two-point conversion and victory. “I just did what I was told to do and hoped for the best,” McGraw said, “I don’t want to be a showoff or anything. It was a total team effort.”
