World IN BRIEF : HONG KONG : 250 ‘Boat People’ to Be Repatriated

Britain and Vietnam agreed to deport more than 250 Vietnamese “boat people” in Hong Kong. It was seen as a prelude to the possible return of thousands of refugees who cannot prove they fled persecution in their Communist homeland. The Hong Kong government said that only “double-backers”--people who volunteered to go home but then returned to the British colony--will be sent back, along with their relatives. No date has been set for the repatriation of the double-backers, but it is expected to be within weeks, a Hong Kong official said.
