Story on Target

The feature “Criminal Activity Against Unsuspecting Tourists Increasing Worldwide,” Sept. 22, was right on target. Having just returned from an odyssey covering Scandinavia, Germany and Switzerland, I would offer a few additional insights.
The economic problems are evident and many railway stations are choked with the homeless camping out and aggressively begging, such as in Hamburg where a German warned me not to donate to the Hummel-faced youth whose companion was too close to my shoulder bag. One fellow American, wearing the obvious waist money pouch, was robbed of her knapsack at a youth hostel.
Despite the necessity of being ever vigilant this travel year, the rewards of meeting kind-hearted Europeans more than outweighs the fears.
