Ashton-Tate Reduces Work Force: The Torrance-based software company announced that it is reducing its U.S. work force by about 100 employees, effective immediately, bringing its total worldwide head count to about 1,200 people. The company said the reductions are being made to trim expenses and operate more efficiently, and are not related to its pending merger with Borland International Inc. In July, Ashton-Tate entered into a definitive merger agreement providing for the purchase of Ashton-Tate by Borland.
