Caltech in Pasadena was named the sixth-best college value in the nation last week by Money magazine.
In its second annual survey, the magazine analyzed 1,011 colleges and universities and identified the 100 best values based on quality of students, faculty, facilities and tuition.
Three of the Claremont Colleges also placed in the top 100. Pomona College was rated 45th; Harvey Mudd College was 62nd, and Claremont McKenna College came in at No. 93.
Caltech’s “top-notch” faculty and high-powered student body, with mean Scholastic Aptitude Test scores of 1,410 out of a possible 1,600, made this private school a top value despite $14,100 tuition, according to Money.
The top 100 list, which included 56 private schools, used such indicators as student-to-faculty ratio, average SAT scores, library resources, graduation rates, percentage of graduates who earn doctorate degrees, and the number of graduates who make Standard & Poor’s Executive-College Survey of 70,000 top corporate executives.
Placing first was Rice University, which offers 3,900 students an Ivy League-caliber education at half the price, the magazine said.
