Prop. 103 Rebates

It was with great sadness that I read your editorial (“Insurers Must Do the Right Thing,” Aug. 19) urging insurance companies to knuckle under to Garamendi’s interpretation of Proposition 103.
Is it not obvious what Garamendi’s grandstanding is all about? Cannot most people see why he selects the issues about which he clamors? Does it not appear that his primary motivation is to springboard himself to bigger and better positions? Let’s not forget his alliance with Assembly Speaker Willie Brown and the California Trial Lawyers against SB 941 (no-fault insurance), which would have given California needed insurance reform and, coincidentally, premium relief.
All we seem to get from Garamendi is whatever he perceives to be currently popular or politically expedient, not what is effective.
In your editorial, you underscored his effort by lending your legitimacy to his personal agenda. While the insurance companies are the current “bad guys,” that does not mean they should categorically acquiesce to Garamendi’s (or The Times’) interpretation of Proposition 103. Needless to say, I vehemently disagree with your opinion.
