NATION IN BRIEF : NORTHEAST : Power Still Out in Wake of Hurricane
Three days after Hurricane Bob smashed into the Northeast with 115-m.p.h. winds, thousands were still without electricity. About 100,000 customers were without power in Massachusetts, including 71,000 on Cape Cod. More than 70,000 were in the dark on Long Island, 41,000 in Rhode Island, 16,000 in Connecticut and 13,000 in Maine. In areas with electric sewage pumps, refuse was backing up in basements; residents of other areas had to use portable toilets--or buckets--and forgo bathing. One little girl in Warwick, R.I., asked what she missed most, said, “Nintendo--and the toilet.”
