Celebrate summer by sinking your teeth into a fresh, juicy slice of watermelon at Alhambra’s Farmers Market.
Today is Watermelon Eating Day at the open-air market, and produce growers from all over California are offering some of the best melon in town at discount prices. Free slices will be available for sampling.
The 7-year-old city-run market is spread out on a parking lot at the corner of Chico Street and Stoneman Avenue. One day each month, the city holds a special event to feature a particular item for sale.
The market is open today from 8 a.m. to noon. There will be free raffles for produce packages and baskets of kitchen cooking tools.
At 10 a.m., there will be an old-fashioned watermelon-eating contest to see who can chomp down a giant slice the fastest.
In addition to eating watermelon, shoppers can browse around the market and choose from a variety of oranges, peaches, Asian pears and even fresh-baked Italian bread. Fifty-five farmers sell their wares at the market.
