Area Team Wins Baseball Regional Opener
Randy Wolf and Matt Gershon each singled home two runs in a five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh and final inning as Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks defeated Selma, Calif., 7-6, in the opening round of the Babe Ruth 14-year-old Pacific Southwest baseball regional at West Jordan, Utah.
With his team trailing, 6-2, in the seventh, Joel Orme reached base on an error. Jordan Fujimoto and Mike Melucci followed by drawing walks.
Wolf singled to right field to drive in two runs. Two outs later, Gershon singled home Melucci and Wolf to tie the score, 6-6.
Ricky Anguiano then hit a chopper that the shortstop bobbled. When the throw to first was high for an error, Gershon raced home with the game-winning run.
Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks is idle today and will play Guam on Monday.
